At Akiva, the ultimate goal of the mathematics program is to teach our students lifelong skills.  Math is a subject that extends beyond the classroom walls. The program is designed to help students establish links between classroom learning and everyday life.  Students are placed in meaningful mathematical experiences. Each lesson leads to achievement through best practice in each strand of mathematics:

  • Number Sense and Numeration
  • Measurement, Geometry and Spatial Sense
  • Patterning and Algebra
  • Data Management and Probability

Math is a key component in a child’s intellectual development, as well as a determining factor in students’ educational success.  Our curriculum in based on the Quebec Education Plan (QEP) competencies:

  • Solves a situational problem
  • Uses mathematical reasoning

  •  Team Teaching: Two qualified math teachers plan, teach and assess each class
  • Small Group Instruction: Differentiation tailored to meet the needs of all learners
  • Core Text: Nelson Math
  • Math Competitions: Grades 4,5,6
  • Mad Minutes: Mastery of basic math facts
  • A Celebration of STEM: A day celebrating science technology, engineering and math
  • Technology: Blended learning, flipped classrooms, the use of various online programs enhance daily concept and skill mastery

At Akiva, students have the opportunity to become familiar with ideas and practices that are specifically related to today’s world, and are encouraged to be creative thinkers and collaborative problem solvers of tomorrow.
