Akiva School celebrated our annual Hebrew Language Week, which coincides with the birth month of Eliezer Ben Yehuda, a pioneer in the revival of the Hebrew language. This year, our students learned about Naomi Shemer- נעמי שמר (July 13, 1930 – June 26, 2004), who was a leading Israeli musician and songwriter, hailed as the “first lady of Israeli song and poetry”. In 1967, she wrote “Jerusalem of Gold,” subsequently considered the best-loved Israeli song of all time. In 1983, she was awarded the Israel Prize. The week was filled with special lessons, classic songs, fun activities and a few surprises surrounding Hebrew language.
