The first step is establishing how much money you want or are willing to spend on a new machine. It's important to be realistic about what you can afford, which may mean going with less RAM and storage—or even foregoing an SSD altogether—if it means saving up for other things, like travel or home improvements. If your budget allows for it, however, upgrading components later on down the line will not only make your laptop experience more enjoyable but also extend its lifespan by allowing you buy a new one once technology has moved forward enough that upgrading isn't feasible anymore (which tends not happen).
Your needs
Before you can choose a laptop, you need to know what kind of computer will best suit your needs. Your main considerations should be:

What are your intentions for the machine? Why do you want it?

How much money can you reasonably spend on this purchase?

How often will you be using it and how long at a time?

Operating system

Windows: If you're a Windows user and want to stick with what's familiar, then it makes sense to go with something running the same software. If you're new to laptops, though, it's worth noting that Chrome OS is based on Linux—and as such many of its applications are also available for that operating system.

Mac: Apple has been making computers since the 1980s. In recent years they've become particularly well known for their MacBook Air line of laptops. Macs tend to be expensive but very reliable and easy-to-use computers; however, if you're not interested in having an all-Apple experience (or just don't like paying extra for things), this may not be the best choice for you.

Linux: This option isn't as common yet but offers more flexibility than either Windows or Mac laptops do by default (though there are also plenty of Linux-based operating systems). If you want total control over how your computer operates or just love tinkering with everything from hardware settings down through code itself then this could be your ideal platform! Nowadays most people who choose this path go with Ubuntu which comes preloaded on many devices already sold today including some gaming consoles too!
Screen size
When it comes to finding the right laptop, screen size is an important factor. The larger your screen size, the easier it is for you to multitask and see everything clearly. But be careful: some manufacturers (notably Apple) have made smaller laptops with big screens. If you're not sure what screen size works best for you, there are a few things to consider before choosing yours:

How far away will I typically be from my laptop?

Am I willing to sit at a desk or table instead of on my lap?
The answers to these questions should help determine your ideal screen size. For example, if you're looking for something portable but still want plenty of workspace space, look into getting a 14-inch laptop with an anti-glare touchscreen display like this one from Dell or this one from Toshiba (both offer excellent performance). If those options aren't quite right but are closer than what they've offered before!
CPU (processor)
In simplest terms, the CPU is the brain of your laptop. It's responsible for processing data and instructions, which it does by breaking down tasks into smaller steps. If you want to play top-notch games or work with complex software—or if you're just a power user in general—you'll want to make sure your CPU has as many cores as possible (more on this later).
While there are lots of factors that affect performance, clock speed remains one of the most important specs when choosing a new laptop. Clock speed refers to how fast your processor operates—the higher the number is, the faster it runs. Generally speaking: more GHz is better than fewer GHz; more MHz (megahertz) is better than fewer MHz; IPC (instructions per cycle) matters less than MHz or GHz because modern processors have reached peak efficiency at around 3GHz/4GHz or so.
You should also take into account thermal design power (TDP). TDP measures how much heat a given processor produces under load and can be used as an indicator of which laptops will be able to handle heavy workloads without overheating or throttling performance in order to reduce heat output
GPU (graphics card)
If you're looking for a laptop that will allow you to play the latest PC games, or edit and stream videos, a graphics card is an important component. It's also important if you regularly do photo editing on your computer—particularly if there are large files involved. The GPU is responsible for displaying all graphics on your screen, so it can handle most processing tasks associated with using your computer.
Most laptops have integrated GPUs (integrated chips) instead of discrete ones (separate chips). This means that 1) integrated GPUs aren't as powerful as separate cards and 2) having more than one isn't an option on most laptops.
RAM (memory)
The RAM (Random Access Memory) is a crucial part of any computer, as it is used to store data temporarily. When you're working on something, your computer pulls the needed information from your hard drive and puts it into RAM to make it easier for your CPU to access. The more memory you have, the more data your system can handle at one time and thus improve performance.
SSD or HDD?
If you’re looking for the highest performance and want to run applications with the least amount of lag, then an SSD is your best choice. An SSD will give you faster speeds, quicker boot times and better responsiveness when compared to a traditional hard drive. This is particularly beneficial if you often use demanding software like video editing or 3D rendering programs.
However, if storage capacity is more important than performance then a traditional HDD might be the right choice for you. While they may not be as fast or reliable as SSDs, HDDs are considerably cheaper than their NVMe counterparts and offer significantly more storage space at lower prices per gigabyte than their flash counterpart.
Another consideration when choosing between HDDs and SSDS is speed: solid state drives can only get so fast (currently up to about 5200rpm), whereas hard disk drives can spin as fast as 7200rpm or even 10000rpm! So if speed matters more than cost or reliability then go with an older generation spinning disk drive instead - remember that your data transfer rate isn't just limited by your connection speed but also how quickly data can be written onto/read from each individual platter within the drive itself!
